Hepatitis B

"I'm immunized against hepatitis B, right?"
If you are in college now then you will have had to prove that you had the three shot series. In the United States it is mandated that all school age children and teens be immunized against Hepatitis B with a series of three injections.

"How do I know my immunization worked?"
People do not always 'sero-covert' after vaccination, or they may get a confirmatory test which does not reflect immunity after the first 15 years or so post vaccination. So unless you have a blood test which proves it you cannot be sure that you have immunity status.

"Can you die from hepatitis B?"
The mortality rate ranges from 25 to 40% in some studies.

"Can this be cured?"
No cure exists for hepatitis B but it may be controlled with antiviral therapy and monitored throughout life.

"I never used IV drugs, can I still get this?"
Yes, it is transmitted through other body fluids, but kissing seems to hold little risk unless there are bleeding gums, open sores etc. In about 25% of cases, there is no clear risk factor for transmission such as IV drug use, accidental exposure or promiscuous unprotected sexual behavior.
