Chlamydia

"My girlfriend and I have been together for 3 years and she tells me now that she has chlamydia, did she cheat on me?"
It takes about 1-3 weeks for this infection to incubate. Either you or your partner can have this for years and not known about it. Only 10% of women become symptomatic with this disease enough to seek medical attention and get tested. Often, one partner will suddenly develop symptoms and get tested and assume that the infection began recently. Your girlfriend may have gotten this before you met her or vice versa.

"How serious is chlamydia, really?"
It can lead to severe pelvic infections in females and low level chronic infections in males if left untreated.

"How common is chlamydia?"
There are 3 million new cases in the United States diagnosed annually and it is the most common STD. It is documented in 1 out of every 6 teenage girls and 1 in 10 teenage boys.

"Can chlamydia be cured?"
Yes. You and your partner need to be tested and treated with antibiotics.

"What are the symptoms of this?"
The risk of developing symptoms is about 1% in infected men and may present with an irritating penile discharge.

"Can I get this if she gives me oral sex?"
Oral transmission is thought to be rare although chlamydia is occasionally found in the throat.

"How do doctors test for this?"
There is a urine test for men and women.
